About me, the Books, Travel and the Translation.

I guess you would like me to include a general description of myself?  Now that could be a tricky feat, considering I am a writer.  There may be some backstage juggling of the truth.

An outlook he still holds close is his old school motto:
“Virtus non Stemma”
In plain English
“Worth not Birth”

The story of

Matt James Malpass

Matt James Malpass was born and raised on a housing estate in North West London, England. Aged 16, he entered Willesden Technical College to learn his trade as a housepainter. Shortly after, Matt travelled extensively for many years.

August 2002, long before Brexit, he crossed the Channel to begin a new life on the Bassin d’Arcachon, southwest France. Today, he manages his own painting business and enjoys his pastime, writing imaginative tales.

Storyline

1994

The real story begins with a journey to South America in 1994, where Matt became lifelong friends with an Australian bricklayer, Baz. Their alliance has never wavered from day one.

2002

After many years roaming, Matt settled in France, learnt the French language and started his own painting business. Time passed quickly and, near Bordeaux, he married and founded a family.

2012

Established in France with decades of travel stories to recount, he put his mind to noting those adventures onto paper. Several pages soon led to his first novel, ‘Backpacking with Baz’ his travel diary.

2019

‘Backpacking with Baz’ was published as an English written paperback and eBook, an irritation to his French ‘amis’ who demanded a translation. A good friend, Alain Jourjon, took on the task.

2020

Alain, AJ, surpassed Matt’s expectations, creating a new European readership. With his first novel successfully translated into French, it lit his imagination and the path for his first book for youngsters, Hublo, the story of an alien whose spaceship crashes in Norfolk, England.

2021

AJ cleverly translated the humour of Hublo into French. Based around the Bassin d’Arcachon, the initial public response to ‘Ublo’ was overwhelming, selling fast and demanding a second edition. Due to its success, Matt created his own publishing house in France, Éditions Mattou.

2022

Hublo & Ublo evolved into paperback trilogies, which can also be found as Kindle eBook editions on Amazon.

Matt created this website.

Today

Well, that’s another story…

The sequel to ‘Backing with Baz’, reveals their travels across Africa, Indonesia and the Outback. ‘There and Back with Baz’ is already drafted in English…
